Gene Davis was a Washington, DC artist and part of the 1960’s Washington Color School art movement. He regarded the stripe as “Subject matter – in the same way that one artist uses the nude and another landscape.” Davis described his method as “Extremely romantic, chaotic, intuitive – anything but careful and calculated.”

Gene Davis, Black Grey Beat, 1964 acrylic, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gift from the Vincent Melzac Collection.
