Gene Davis was a Washington, DC artist and part of the 1960’s Washington Color School art movement. He regarded the stripe as “Subject matter – in the same way that one artist uses the nude and another landscape.” Davis described his method as “Extremely romantic, chaotic, intuitive – anything but careful and calculated.”
Gene Davis, Red Witch, 1966, acrylic on canvas, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Bequest of Florence Coulson Davis
