The Smithsonian American Art Museum holds the largest collection of work by the African American modernist William H. Johnson (1901-1970). After living several years in Europe, Johnson returned to the U.S. in 1938, and drew on an interest in primitivism developed abroad to produce paintings characterized by stunning color and folk art simplicity.
